Sacagawea
By: Tanya Raghu

Sacagawea was always quiet, shy and reticent but was a vital part of the Corps of Discovery. She was the core of the group which kept the corps functioning the way it did. Even though was exposed to White, European cultures, she always kept her Native American beliefs, ideals, and values in front of anything else. She was persistent in anything she did and never gave up by always sacrificing herself for the group even though she was forced to do this job. Louis and Clark always admired her for her determination to keep on going even though she was a woman and she had a baby just two months before the exploration voyage. Clark also admired her for the witty or smart ways she communicated to the white explorers even though she did not know English well. Even though she was only hired to communicate with Indians the Corps needed to trade, communicate, or make friendships with, she also saved the Corps live when it was freezing cold and she dug up roots using Native American techniques.
